Leonard H. English, 92, a lifelong resident of Peckville, died Thursday morning in Hospice Community Care, Dunmore. He and his wife, Carolyn Davies English, were married 66 years.
Born in Peckville, son of the late Walter and Edna Curtis English, he was a graduate of Blakely High School, class of 1938. A Navy veteran of World War II
, he served aboard the USS Hoe, SS 258. Leonard was the owner of English's Pro Hardware & Appliance Store, Peckville; a family business that was started by his father in the 1930s. He was a charter member of the US Submarine Veterans of World War II; a member of Shopa-Davey VFW
Post 6082, Peckville; A. Pierson Hurd American Legion Post 236, Peckville; Peckville Bowling League at Queen City Lanes, Olyphant; the former Oriental Star Lodge 588 Free and Accepted Masons, Peckville; and the Peckville United Methodist Church.
Leonard was a hard worker, even at an early age, which was attested to by the fact that he attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting. His hard work continued throughout his life with the result being that the family business continued to be successful and continues to this day. He was proud of his service to his country and especially proud of being a submariner on the USS Hoe.
He enjoyed attending submarine reunions at various locations in the country, giving him an opportunity to visit many states. His family, his work and his country are what Leonard's life was all about. He served each one well and will be missed.
Leonard's family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the staff and nurses of the Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart at Hospice Community Care, Dunmore, for the exceptional care and concern extended to Leonard while he was in their care.
Also surviving are two sons, Kevin English and wife, Gail, Blakely; and Brian English and wife, Julie, Seneca, S.C.; two daughters, Barbara English, Bethlehem; and Joyce Chowanec and husband, George, Peckville; seven grandchildren, Kenneth Alderfer, Gwynne Alderfer-Stewart and husband, Ray; Melanie Flemming and husband, Michael; Jeffrey Chowanec and wife, Lisa; Laura Rutkoski and husband, Robert; Katelyn English and Lee Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Chandler, Hannah, Stevie Michelle, Michael David, Brady, Caleb and Chase; one sister, Louise English Wood Job, Tucson, Ariz.; three nieces and several cousins.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. in the First United Presbyterian Church, 1557 Main St., Peckville, with services at 11 by the Rev. Virginia Miner, pastor. Interment with military honors, Prospect Hill Cemetery, Peckville.
