Maria Metz, 83, of Pineland, Florida, and formerly of Beach Lake, Pa., passed away at Lee Memorial Hospital, Cape Coral, Florida, on May 30, 2013, after a brief illness.
Born on March 25, 1930, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Maria found home in the United States, arriving with her family in August of 1956, settling first in Glendale, New York, and relocating to Beach Lake, Pa., in 1967. As co-owner and operator of the Big Apple Tavern in Beach Lake and later as co-owner and proprietor of Henry's Sport Store of Beach Lake, Maria became widely known as a compassionate person who treated her many customers as long lost family. Friends and sportspeople of the area still recall her enthusiasm many years after her retirement. And with her own interests taking a back seat, Maria's family and friends were her life.
Maria is survived by her husband of 65 years, Heinrich (Henry) Metz, Pineland, Florida; one daughter, Ingrid Lukan and husband, Reinhold (Ron) Calkins, Wayne County; and two sons, Peter, Beach Lake; and Guenter and his wife, Paula, Honesdale; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a twin brother, Rudolf Lampert, Germany.
Cremation took place in Fort Myers, Florida, and a private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
