Marie Abda suddenly passed away on Saturday, Jan. 26.
She was energetic, resourceful, kind and a loving mother. She was born in Olyphant, Pa., on Aug. 28, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Alexandria Hammernick Halulko. Her family moved to a farm in Nicholson, where she finished high school. During those years, she tried to start a girls football team because she did not want to be a cheerleader! After graduation, she moved to New York City to live with her sisters. She worked in Miami, Fla. She met her future husband, William Abda Sr. They eloped on Oct. 19, 1946, and worked side by side in a restaurant business they started. They converted it to a grocery store, Abda's Market. They operated the store together for 55 years in the Pine Brook section of Scranton. The store was a neighborhood meeting place. The Abdas were involved in the Pine Brook Association that planted trees and tried to restore community pride.
After retirement, Marie and her husband traveled the U.S., the Caribbean and Spain. She enjoyed life and liked to "keep moving."
Marie is survived by her daughter, Sandra Abda King, M.D., and her husband, Joseph J. King, M.D., Monroe, N.C.; and her son, William J. Abda Jr. and his wife, Toni Sarcenelli Abda, R.N., Clarks Summit. Marie loved her grandchildren, Joseph J. King III, M.D., and his wife, Joanne Lagmay, M.D., of Gainsville, Fla.; Melanie D. King, Esq., of Silver Spring, Md.; Adam Abda King, C.F.I.; William F. Abda of Scranton; and Robert B. Abda, a post-graduate student studying R.N. at Wilkes University. Marie leaves behind a surviving baby sister, Anne Gaudy of Homestead, Fla.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
