Marjorie Howells

Marjorie Howells, a resident at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, formerly of North Scranton, died Monday at the center. She was the widow of William "Mike" Howells, who died July 21, 2006. The couple was married for 60 years.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Corcoran Walton. Before her retirement, she worked in the law office of her daughter, and had previously worked in the local garment industry for many years. Marjorie was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union; she served as the local president and was active in many union affairs, including organizing and singing in the choir. She was also a notary public.

She was actively involved in all area politics. She also ran for convention delegate during the presidential campaign. She enjoyed travel, especially to Atlantic City, and shopping was one of her favorite past-times.

She was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish.

Surviving are two daughters, attorney Anne Marie Howells; and Deborah Gasper and husband, Joseph; and two sons, Michael and wife, Donna; and Kenneth and wife, Bernadette, all of Scranton; seven grandchildren, Brian Howells, Garry Allen Bartosh Jr.; Shawn and wife, Eileen; Katryna, Kenneth, Michael Howells and Jessica Munie; nine great-grandchildren, Ashley and fiancé, Michael Gleeson; Nancy Anne Bartosch, Andrea Howells, Joshua Martin, Emily, Jake and Kenneth Howells Jr., Gary Bartosch III and Kendra McCauch; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Martin Howells; a grandson, John Paul Bartosch; several brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be Friday from the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave., with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St., Scranton. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

Friends may call Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
