Marjorie J. Lavelle, 89, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died early Thursday morning at the Green Ridge Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Eugene.
Born Feb. 9, 1923, daughter of the late Francis X. Sr. and Mary Crane Hopkins, Marjorie was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, class of 1941. She had worked for the Pennsylvania Coal Co. before raising her eight children. Before retirement, she worked as a clerk for the Pennsylvania State Liquor Store. She was a member of St. John Neumann Parish in South Scranton. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and especially loved traveling with her family and friends.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, she will long be remembered and forever be missed by those who love her. She died surrounded by her family.
She is survived by eight children: six sons, Eugene and wife, Kathy, Marina Del Rey, Calif.; Timothy and wife, Maureen, Scranton; Patrick and wife, Marsha, Punxsutawney; Daniel and wife, Sandra, Spring Brook Twp.; Terrence and wife, Tammy, Long Beach, Calif.; and Mark and wife, Maria, Dunmore; and two daughters, Marjorie Silverstein and husband, Ira, Bethesda, Md.; and Christine Lavelle, Scranton; two brothers, Leo Hopkins, Stewart, Fla.; and Robert Hopkins and wife, Jean, Scranton; three sisters, Nan Halloran, Long Valley, N.J.; Claire Connolly, Indianapolis; and Evelyn Griffin, Willow Grove; 15 grandchildren, Stacey Murphy and husband, James; Kelly Cohen and husband, Jeff; Maura Cromwell and husband, Christopher; Kate, Brian, Kathleen, Daniel, Christopher, Bianca, Xavier, Mark Jr. and Jordan Lavelle, Ellen and Adam Silverstein; and Leslie Hatfield and husband, Jim; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by brothers, Vincent and Francis X. Hopkins Jr.; and sisters, Kay Hardars and Marilyn Culkin.
The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard St., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
