Mary Calafut Savage

Mary Calafut Savage, 93, a resident of the Forest City Nursing Home and formerly of Canaan Street, Carbondale, died Friday afternoon at the nursing home. She was the wife of the late Chester Savage.

Born Jan. 30, 1919, in Carbondale, daughter of the late Frank Calafut and Kathryn Novabilski Calafut Potochak, she was a graduate of Fell Township High School, Simpson, and worked alongside her husband, Chester, on their farm in Greenfield Twp. for many years. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, and attended church daily before going to the nursing home. She enjoyed bingo, polkas, gardening, cooking and picking up aluminum cans to recycle. She enjoyed cooking holiday meals and her many walks to the artesian well in Carbondale for water. Her family was very important to her and she was so loving and giving to them, she will be deeply missed.

She is survived by a sister, Nellie Payne, Plainfield, N.J.; special great-nephew and great-nieces, Jerome Calafut, Olyphant; Christina Ross and husband, Dan, Kingsley; Jennifer Hollister and husband, Tracy, Archbald; and Stacey Kucharski and husband, Jeff, Scott Twp.; great-great-nephews, Zachary John Ross and Jeffrey John Kucharski; several other nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Frank and John Calafut; two sisters, Helen Calafut and Sophie Klosky; special nephew and niece, Jerome Calafut and Joan Klosky.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church St., Carbondale. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park, Montdale.
