Mary Devers Schwass, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Dec. 7 at Regional Hospital of Scranton after a prolonged illness.
Born Jan. 2, 1948, daughter of the late Alice Brown and Joseph Devers, she was a graduate of Holy Rosary High School. Mary was a longtime member of St. Clare's Church in Green Ridge, where she taught several CCD classes. She spent most of her working career as the executive secretary to several district engineers at PennDOT.
She is survived by her husband Lou; a son, Jason and his wife, Larissa; two brothers, Anthony and Joseph; and a sister, Louise.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Alice; and her brother, James.
Mary was an exceptional wife and loving mother, who tried to bring happiness into the lives of so many people. She had a smile as bright as a sunny July day, with a laugh that was simply contagious. Mary had a sincere love for many friends and relatives and for all types of animals, especially her grandpuppy, Gavin. She found much joy in sitting and watching the birds fly and feed outside her windows. Mary frequently volunteered to help the less fortunate. For her most recent project, she organized the collection of handmade scarves to be given out to guests of the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in Scranton on Christmas Day 2012. Everyone else came first in Mary's eyes and now we guess that God had the need for another angel.
Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Knight O'Donnell Funeral Home, 323 Williams St., Scranton. Cremation took place at Maple Hill Crematory, Archabld.
In lieu of flowers and cards, memorial contributions may be made to the Breast Cancer
Research Foundation, 60 E. 56th St., 8th Floor, New York, NY 10022.
