Mary Kelly Alford

Mary Kelly Alford, 92, died Friday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cmdr. William L. Alford, USN.

Born Sept. 4, 1920, to the late George Michael and Catherine Dempsey Kelly, she graduated from Holy Rosary High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Scranton, then joined the Naval Nursing Corps, serving from 1944 to 1946. She was a longtime Hampton, Va., resident where she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its St. Jude Society. She was also a member of the Hampton Womens' Club, the Military Order of World Wars and the James River Hunt Club. Well-known as the "cookie lady" or "Nurse Mary," she volunteered for more than 25 years as a nurse at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School.

She loved to travel with friends, visit her grandchildren and swing on her backyard swing.

She is survived by her children, Anne A. (John) Zawistoski, Proctor, Vt.; Beth (Harry) Hutchison, Charlotte, N.C.; John M. Alford, Hampton, Va.; and Kelly (Susan) Alford, Hampton, Va.; a sister, Ann Kelly Dolan, Scranton; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Kelly Halloran.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will take place beside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton, Va.
