Mary Louise Gowka, 89, a lifelong resident of West Scranton, died Sunday in Mountain View Care Center.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Sylvester and Kathryn Diakun Gowka, she was of the Protestant faith. She was educated in Scranton public schools and a graduate of Scranton Central High School. Before retirement, she was employed as an office manager at Brooks Manufacturing.
Mary was an active and adventurous woman who was devoted to her family and took great pleasure in spending time with her many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed fishing and was an avid reader and a master of crossword puzzles. She was also an expert gardener who loved to prepare gourmet dishes made from home- grown vegetables.
Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Helen Gowka, Taylor; and Beatrice Gowka, Old Forge; nieces, Kathryn Gowka-Weiss, Allentown; Andrea Karwaski, Taylor; Carole Walsh, Middle Island, N.Y.; and Judy Tutino, Old Forge; nephews, Eugene Curran, Moscow; and Daniel Gowka, Factoryville; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was also preceded in death by six sisters, Elizabeth Curran, Helen Kowalchick, Olga Gowka, Kathryn Gowka, Katie Gowka and Eva Dwinn; and three brothers, Daniel, Sylvester and Walter Gowka.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's St., Scranton, with services by the Rev. Arthur Davis, pastor Asbury United Methodist Church. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
