Michael "Happy" Gavalla of Dunmore died Tuesday at Regional Hospital of Scranton following an illness. His wife is the former Mary Domenick. The couple celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary Oct. 20.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna Holup Gavalla. Before his retirement, he was employed by COLTS for more than 30 years as a bus driver. Upon his retirement, he began his association with the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., where he thoroughly enjoyed coming to work each day. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.
Mike enjoyed going to the mall to visit with friends. He was an avid New York Giants, Yankees and Penn State fan and liked going to those sporting events with his sons, of whom he was extremely proud.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael and fiancée, Sarah; and Justin, all of Germantown, Md.; sister, Monica Gavalla, Scranton; a sister in-law, Ann Elaine Brown and her husband, Gerald, Las Vegas; two nieces, Kristen Braun, Urbana Md.; and Jill Lopes, Olney, Md.
The funeral will be conducted on Monday from the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish (St. Mary), 322 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Interment, Italian-American Cemetery in Scranton, will be private at the convenience of the family.
