Michael S. Mattes, 83, died Monday at the Hazleton General Hospital.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Samuel and Anna (Salamida) Mattes. He graduated from the Technical High School of Scranton and then joined the U.S. Navy
in 1950, where he served for four years. Michael moved to Somerville, N.J., where he was employed by the RCA Corp. In 1961, he was relocated to Scranton in order to open a new RCA plant in Mountaintop, Pa. He was president of the union and worked for RCA for 30 years, retiring in 1991. Michael enjoyed the outdoors and was always working on various projects. He loved spending time with his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were two sisters, Marie Mattes and Pauline Chambers.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Mary Rose Lapetina; daughters, Lisa Kondash and husband, Bernie; and Kimberly Sarna and husband, David, all of Mountaintop; his son, Michael, also of Mountaintop, who along with several grandsons and three caregivers, Joanie, Barbie and Lisa, tirelessly and selflessly took care of Michael for several years. His sister, Rose Baldwin, Exton, Pa.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Wanda Lapetina; nine grandsons and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. from the Fierro Funeral Home, 26 W. Second St., Hazleton. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.
Friends may call this evening from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Michael's name to the Hazleton Animal Shelter.
