Michael T. Walsh, 58, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Sunday at Regional Hospital of Scranton after a courageous battle with cancer. He and his beloved, Deborah Mirtz Walsh, had been married for 37 years.
Born on April 13, 1955, son of Thomas Walsh, of Scranton, and the late Ann Marie (Nan) Scanlon Walsh, Michael was a 1973 West Scranton Catholic High School graduate before attending the University of Scranton. Before its closing, he worked more than 18 years for the Trane Co. Before his illness, he was most recently employed by CPG of Moosic as a lab technician.
An avid sports fan, Michael loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed bowling in the Local 81 Electricians bowling league. He was a local youth athletics coach for South Scranton Little League and junior football. He and his wife also served as den parents for the Cub Scouts. A cornea donor, he gave the gift of sight upon his death. He was a self-taught handyman, seemingly capable of fixing anything. A loving husband, son, father, brother and adoring grandfather to six, Michael will never be forgotten by all of those who loved him.
He is also survived by his three children, Jeremy Walsh and wife, Maura, Dunmore; Ryan Walsh and wife, Michele, Lake Hopatcong, N.J.; and Sarah Arcurie and husband, Graig, Scranton; four siblings, Kevin Walsh, Mary Ann Terry and husband, Neil, all of Scranton; Patricia Kelly and husband, Kevin, Weatherly; and Kathleen Moroski and husband, Thomas, Moosic; six grandchildren, Aidan, Bridget, Caleb and Chloe Walsh and Luciano and Gaetano Arcurie; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by infant siblings, Thomas and Nance Walsh; and his loving St. Bernard, Guinness.
His family wishes to thank Drs. Martin Hyzinski, Michael Burke and Phillip Boccagno, for the tremendous care they had given to Michael throughout the years.
Blessing services by Monsignor Michael J. Delaney are scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
