Olwyn Johnson, 96, formerly of Blakely, Pa., and a longtime resident of Park Ridge, Ill., passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, September 15, 2013, at Martin Health Center in Bloomington, Ill.
The youngest of the five children of David John Thomas and Mary Ellen (Moses) Thomas, Olwyn was born on January 12, 1917, in Blakely, Pa. Olwyn was very proud of her Welsh heritage. She married Merle F. Johnson of the Peckville-Olyphant area on October 22, 1938. They were both graduates of Blakely High School and Scranton-Lackawana Business College. In their early married years, Merle and Olwyn lived in the Eastern U.S. In 1955, they move their young family to Park Ridge, Ill., where they raised their two sons, Thomas and Jeffrey, and joined Park Ridge Presbyterian Church. Olwyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who blessed the lives of everyone she knew. At Park Ridge Church she taught 2nd grade Sunday School, participated in women's organizations, Chi-Rho, and quilting and assisted with the yearly bazaar.
Olwyn was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husband, Merle. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Thomas (Tomoko) Johnson of Bloomington, Ill., and Jeffrey (Karen) Johnson of Mendham, N.J.; and her three grandchildren, Andrew, of Chicago, Ill.; Stephen, of Evanston, Ill.; and Julie of Newport Beach, Calif.
There was a beautiful visitation and service on Sunday, September 22, at 2 p.m. at the Park Ridge Presbyterian Church in Park Ridge, Ill.
Interment and graveside service will be held at Valley View Memorial Park in Montdale, Pa., on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at 2 p.m.
