Paul T. Howe

Paul T. Howe of Lake Ariel died Monday evening at Lackawanna Health Care Center after an illness. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Elizabeth Lambie, who passed away in 1980, and his second wife, the former Ann Gilhool, who passed away in 2005.

Born in Honesdale, son of the late John T. and Marie Dodge Howe, he was a graduate of the Lake Consolidated School and Penn State University and attended the University of Scranton. He was a retired Chemistry and Physics teacher at Western Wayne High School, where he was also a school board member. Prior to his teaching career, he worked for many years in the family business, John T. Howe, operating the gas station. He was a member of the Lake Ariel United Methodist Church, where he had served as treasurer and was a member of the Salem Lodge 330 F&AM, where he served as secretary, and also a member of various Masonic bodies. He was a former member of the Lake Ariel Fire Company. He volunteered at the Red Cross and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander.

Since 1937, he went with his family to Dan's Lake, near Maniwaki, Quebec, which he continued yearly until his health failed. He also enjoyed attending many seasons of Penn State football games.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet Bursis and her husband, T. Jeff, of Lake Ariel; and a son, Peter and his wife, Kathleen, of Downington, Pa.; a brother, Bruce and his wife, Joan, of Lake Ariel; grandchildren, Emerson and Marshall Bursis and Patrick Howe; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Jane Gilpin.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Lake Ariel United Methodist Church, 110 Maple Ave., Lake Ariel.

Friends may call Friday from 4-7 p.m., with Masonic services at 6:45 p.m., in the James Wilson Funeral Home, 143 Gravity Road, Lake Ariel.

Cremation took place in the Lake Region Crematory at the James Wilson Funeral Home, Lake Ariel. Spring interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Maplewood.
