Ray A. Miller

Ray A. Miller, 85, a longtime resident of South Scranton, died Saturday morning in the VNA Inpatient Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center after an illness. He and his wife, the former Ann Marie Conway, were married 51 years at the time of her death on Sept. 2, 2005.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Ray E. and Lydia Lenger Miller and the stepson of the late Jean Francis Miller, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of 1946. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of Branch 17, National Association of Letter Carriers. Before retirement, he was employed as a letter carrier for the Postal Service. After retirement, he was employed by Buchner's Flowers and Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Pileggi and husband, Sal, Clarks Summit; four sons, Paul Miller and wife, Eileen, Scranton; Robert Miller and Thomas Miller, Scranton; and Ray Miller and wife, Kelly, Denville, N.J.; two sisters, Grace Dougherty, Maryland; and Lois Phillips, Clarks Summit; three grandchildren, Nicole Miller, Morgan Miller and Madalyn Miller; his best friend and companion for seven years, Dorothy Mihalik; nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Paul J. Miller Jr.; and a sister, Alice Chapman.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Harrison Putnam, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ. Interment with military honors will follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
