Richard Daniel Del Guercio, 63, of Clarks Summit, died Wednesday at Regional Hospital of Scranton.
Born in Peckville, son of Catherine Evans Del Guercio, Scranton, and the late Jacob Del Guercio, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of 1968. A Navy veteran, having served during the Vietnam War
, he had earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Richard was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church in Scranton, and before retirement, was employed at the Clarks Summit State Hospital.
His hobbies and enjoyments included spending time outdoors, especially biking and hiking in Tennessee and traveling the Appalachian Trail. He was also a Civil War historian, and plain and simply put, he loved life. He was a father figure to his many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be greatly missed by them and the rest of his family.
Richard's family would like to thank the nurses on the 8th floor at Regional Hospital of Scranton, especially Jean Marie and Ashley, for the compassion and special care he received during his stay there.
Also surviving are siblings, Joseph and wife, Ceil; Carol Joyce and husband, James; Catherine Powell and husband, Jack; and Dennis, all of Scranton; Jean Zaccagnino and husband, Dan; Barbara Peters and husband, Anthony; and Elizabeth Calianno, all of Dunmore; Thomas and wife, Pauline, Delaware; Jacob and wife, Kathie, Lake Spangenberg; and Daniel and wife, Roxanne, Colorado; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Jacob W. Del Guercio III.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 712 Linden St., Scranton, with services by the Rev. Howard Woodruff. Friends may call Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
