Robert E. McGoff Sr., 93, a South Scranton resident, died Saturday morning at Commonwealth Hospice of Northeastern Pa. He was the husband of the late Mary L. White McGoff and the couple was married for 50 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Edward J. and Evelyn C. Lynett McGoff, he was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church until its closure and was presently a member of St. John Neumann Parish. He was a graduate of Central High School and attended the University of Scranton. He was employed by the Social Security Administration as a claims representative for 42 years until his retirement. He was a past president of both the South Scranton Little League and South Catholic Father's Club. He was a World War II
veteran serving in the Army
Air Corps. He flew 30 missions including D-Day and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with three Battle Stars. He was a member of American Legion Post 948 until its closure. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed.
Surviving are two sons, Robert E. McGoff Jr. and wife, Marita, Scranton; and Bert McGoff and wife, Paula, Sunset Beach, N.C.; and two daughters, Evelyn Scheller and husband, E. John, with whom he resided; and Gertrude Gillott and husband, Bernard, Clarks Summit; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Hopkins.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from the August J. Haas Funeral Home Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., with Mass at 11 a.m. in Nativity of Our Lord Church, St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard St., to be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
