Robert J. Smith, 93, of Roaring Brook Twp., died Wednesday at the VA Medical Center, Plains Twp. He was the husband of the late Audrey M. Evans Smith.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Jacob and Dora Kellerman Smith, he was a lifelong resident of Roaring Brook Twp. Robert served in the Army
during World War II
and was a prisoner of war for seven months. Before opening his own excavating business, he worked for Penn Auto, Stahl Garage, C&P Auto Parts, Jim Shorten Motors and was a mechanic at Edwards Trucking. Robert was a member of the Lackawanna Lodge 291 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and North Pocono Bible Baptist Church. He liked to hunt, fish and garden, and also enjoyed teaching his grandchildren life lessons.
Robert's family would like to extend a special thanks to "Goldie" and all his caregivers while he was at home.
Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy M. Hayden and husband, James, Dalton; a son, Robert J. "Spider" Smith and wife, Sally, Moscow; a brother, Earl Smith and wife, Marge, Madison, N.J.; three grandchildren, John Robert Smith, Keith and Erik Hayden; a niece and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Martin and Rose Savas.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 3 First St., Spring Brook Twp., with services by the Rev. Timothy Hargett, pastor of North Pocono Bible Baptist Church. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
