Robert Samuel Kern, 84, of Scranton, died Saturday under the care of Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. His wife of 57 years, the former Joan Marie Walker, died Dec. 11, 2011.
Born in Scranton on Dec. 15, 1929, son of the late Samuel and Margaret Corcoran Kern, he was an engineer in the Scranton mines. He was a lifelong member of St. Clare's Church and educated in the Scranton school systems. He was an Army
veteran of the Korean War
. He received his Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of Scranton. He began his career as the manager of the accounting department at the A&P Co., Wyoming Avenue, and retired from the firm of Scwartz Haggerty, Wilkes-Barre. He worked for the local Democtratic party at Post 908 for many years.
Robert and his family enjoyed more than 45 years at Keen Lake Resort in Waymart.
Surviving are three children, Robert Andrew and wife, Denise Rachel Kern, Clarks Summit; Kathleen Joan Kern, Scranton; and John Fitzgerald Kern, Scranton; and four grandchildren, Christopher Robert, Ryan Patrick, Kennedy Bridget and Camryn Elizabeth.
He was also preceded in death by sisters, Grace Barrett and Catherine Ulacky; and brother, William Kern.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Albert P. O'Donnell Funeral Home, 2025 Green Ridge St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
