Salvatore A. Fortese

Salvatore "Sam" A. Fortese, 60, Dunmore, died Thursday morning from complications from leukemia. He and his wife, the former Eileen McKenna, had celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary on June 30.

Raised in Dunmore, he was the son of Grace Prizzi Fortese of Dunmore and the late James Fortese. Sam was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Dunmore, and was a member of the Dunmore Central Catholic High School, class of 1970, and the University of Scranton, class of 1974. He was employed as a controller with the Lackawanna County Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Sam enjoyed hosting parties and cooking for friends and family. He had a great sense of humor, was very friendly and outgoing. He battled his disease with strength and determination. He was a loving husband, son, father, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed more than words can express.

His family would like to thank friends and extended family for all the support through his courageous battle with cancer. They are especially thankful for the care he received from the doctors, nurses and staff at Temple Jeanes Hospital in Philadelphia.

Also surviving are a daughter, Brittany Fortese, Philadelphia; a son, Ryan Fortese and wife, Rose, Philadelphia; a sister, Julie Abel and husband, David, Scranton; two brothers, James and Anthony Fortese, both of Dunmore; a mother-in-law, Pauline McKenna, Dunmore; a brother-in-law, John McKenna and wife, Kim, Jessup; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by a father-in-law, John McKenna.

The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., in Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut Street in Dunmore. Interment to follow in the Dunmore Cemetery.
