Val Harkins, 84, formerly of Scranton, died Friday morning at Country Meadows in Hershey.
Born in Scranton on Dec. 28, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Loretta and Nazzareno Piccotti. Val graduated from Hahnemann Nursing School in 1948, and after practicing in California for a year, she returned to complete her Bachelor of Science in nursing at College Misericordia. She was married to the late Gerald F. Harkins and raised her family while continuing to volunteer for various community organizations. In 1986, she began a job as a nurse for the Scranton School District and continued until her retirement in 1996.
She remained active in many bowling, golf and bridge groups until moving to Hershey earlier this year.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff members of Country Meadows of Hershey, Country Meadows at Home and Compassionate Care Hospice for all of their kindness and consideration during this difficult time.
She is survived by two children, daughter, Marie Harkins of Ithaca, N.Y., and her husband and two children; and son, Dr. Gerald Harkins of Hershey, his wife and two children.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hahnemann/Community Medical Center Nursing Alumni Trustee Scholarship at Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus, 1 Old Main, University Park, PA 16802-1500.
