Viola Louise Scull Marshall

Viola Louise Scull Marshall, 89, formerly a resident of Seelyville, died Tuesday while a resident at Wayne Woodlands Manor, Waymart. Her husband, Harvey, died in October 1967.

Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Carbondale, daughter of the late Clarence and Florence Shaffer Scull, she graduated from Carbondale High School and moved to Newark, N.J., where she did administrative work for one year.

She met her love, Harvey, and they married and established their home in Carbondale. In the early 1950s, they moved to Seelyville. Vi worked for Honesdale TV from 1967 until her retirement in 1989. Vi became very active in the Seelyville Sunday School, where she formed the Chapel Choirs. God blessed her with a beautiful singing voice and she loved to sing God's praises. Everyone was blessed by her love of music. A longtime dedicated member of the Sunbeam-Willing Worker's Class, she was the "star" seller of dishcloths to raise funds for the class. Vi held many positions in the Sunday school and especially enjoyed her tenure as teacher of the teenagers class. She was a charter member of the Seelyville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, having dedicated many hours working in the kitchen for the various dinners served as fundraisers.

Her hobbies included writing letters, baking, creating beautiful embroidered heirlooms and "excelling" at being a friend to everyone.

She showed great courage in overcoming her health challenges and her daily life struggles. Vi maintained a strong will to "keep on going." She never lost her kind spirit and the joy of the Lord in her heart. She was able to laugh even in the most challenging times. A truly dedicated mother, she was welcomed into the arms of her Lord on Tuesday.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Paul Sprague; daughter-in-law, Carol Marshall; grandson, Donald Sprague and wife, Anna, Canada; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew; brother, Raymond Scull and wife, Rosella; nieces and nephew, Sandi, Bonnie and Ron Scull; and cousins, Fred and Helen Gerrity.

She was also preceded in death by two children, son, Alan R. Marshall, in 2004; and daughter, Barbara Sprague, in 2006.

Her family would like to thank her caregivers and doctors for her excellent care at Wayne Woodlands Manor, and also her wonderful neighbors and friends for their caring thoughts, prayers and visits throughout the years.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 N. Main St., Honesdale. Interment will be in Canaan Corners Cemetery, Waymart. Officiating will be George A. Piercy.
