Virgil "Biddy" Bidwell, 82, a lifelong resident of Honesdale, died Monday at home. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Jean M. Dickhut. The couple married Oct. 19, 1957, in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Born April 30, 1930, in Honesdale, he was the son and last surviving member of the Virgil W. and Josephine Smith Bidwell family. He was an Army
veteran, serving during the Korean War
. Before retiring in 1993, Biddy worked for Delaware Valley Cement Block Co., Port Jervis, N.Y.
He was a member of VFW
Post 531, Honesdale; Teamsters Union Local 465 and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church; and an honorary member of Bucks Cove Rod and Gun Club.
Biddy was happiest when he was at home with his family or at his beloved hunting club, hanging out with all his buddies, and especially morning "coffee" with Bob and Roger. He died surrounded by his family.
Also surviving are a son, Randy Bidwell and wife, Amy; two daughters, Tammie Bea and Kathy Bidwell-Baker and husband, Ron, all of the Honesdale area; five grandchildren, Sarah and Cody Stanton, Kalean Bea and Paige and Megan Bidwell; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Bidwell; two infant brothers; and four sisters, Betty Seeley, Alice Jennings, Josephine Hazen and Margaret Loscig.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Honesdale. Interment will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home Inc., 428 Main St., Honesdale, on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
