Walter Kapelan, 87, of Moosic, died Tuesday morning at the home of his daughters. He was married to the late Dorothy Owens Kapelan, the love of his life, who died Nov. 10, 2010.
Born in Scranton on May 14, 1926, son of the late Nicholas and Anna Smacula Kapelanovich, he proudly served his country during World War II
with the Army, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Russian Orthodox Church in Scranton. Throughout his life, Walter was a truck driver and later in life worked for Highland Associates. He also was the proud owner of Walt's Tires, Taylor, where he enjoyed helping and meeting new and old friends. Walter was a proud do-it-yourselfer.
Surviving are a son, Walter Kapelanovich Jr. and wife, Gloria, Taylor; daughters, Debi Kapelan and Jeanne Kowalski, both of Thornhurst; three grandchildren, Leianne Piccoletti and husband, Robert, Taylor; Wade Kapelanovich and Jennifer, Virginia; and DanaLyn Kapelanovich, Taylor; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa Lynn, Robbie and Matthew Piccoletti; two brothers, Harold Kapelan, Scranton; and Nicholas Kapelan and wife, Marlene, Michigan; a sister, Olga Sigler, Binghamton, N.Y.; cousin, Shirley Courtright Ferrari and husband, Gino, Hazleton; and brother-in-law, David Owens, Scranton.
Walter's entire family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Hospice of the Sacred Heart for its care, comfort and compassion throughout Walter's illness.
The funeral will be Saturday at noon in the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor. Interment with military honors will follow in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Twp.
