William Scott Van Nostrand II, 69, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 29. Scott was born July 21, 1943, in Scranton, Pa. While at the University of Scranton, he lived with his grandparents, Leonard Green Van Nostrand and Mary Russell Gearhart Van Nostrand. He is descended from Jacob Janse Nostrandt who came to New York from Holland in 1638.
Scott grew up in Ridgewood, N.J., and graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1961. He attended the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pa., and graduated in 1965. Scott had resided in Manhattan, N.Y., for 45 years. In 1996, Scott married Edna Ap de Sousa.
Music has always played a very important part in his life, and and he was a professional Dixieland jazz trumpeter. He enjoyed yoga, meditation and traveling with Edna to her home in Brazil; he and Edna were very involved in their neighborhood and in their church, Our Lady of Pompeii. He retired in July after a long career with the City of New York.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Edna and loving family, including siblings, twin sister Anne Louise of Boston, Mass.; Mary of San Francisco, Calif.; Alice of North Palm Beach, Fla.; Len of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Catherine Roselle of Neptune Beach, Fla.; nephews, Phillip Scott Van Nostrand of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Remy Cooper Van Nostrand of Neptune Beach, Fla.; and niece, Catherine Deirdre Van Nostrand of Santa Barbara, Calif.; his sisters-in-law in New York, Polly Johnson and Ana Maria de Souza; his brothers-in-law in Brazil, Sebastiao Ayrton de Sousa and Paulo B. de Sousa, and other loving relatives here and in Brazil. Scott was predeceased by his parents, William Scott Van Nostrand and Anne Louise Clap, and his brother, Bobby.
Scott was a gentle and generous man with a wry sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Services were held Sunday, October 14, at Our Lady of Pompeii, 25 Carmine St. in New York City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Scott's name to the church, Our Lady of Pompeii, 25 Carmine St., New York, NY 10014.
