Michael Carlucci Obituary

Michael J. Carlucci, 94, a longtime Dunmore funeral director and pillar of the community, died Sunday evening in the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late John "Jack" and Mary Coviello Carlucci. Together with his late parents and brother, Leonard, he owned and operated the Carlucci Funeral Home. Mike attended Dunmore schools, and graduated from St. Thomas High School in Scranton. He was a graduate of the American Academy of Funeral Service in New York City and was a licensed funeral director in Pennsylvania for more than 65 years. A member of the greatest generation, he served honorably as a member of the Army in the Medical Corps during World War II in the European, African and Middle Eastern theater of operations. He was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore, the Dunmore-Rome Club, the San Cataldo Club in Dunmore, the former Willow Club in Dunmore and both the Lackawanna County Funeral Directors Association and Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association.

Known affectionately as "Uncle Mike" to many family and friends, he was an extremely generous and patriotic individual, always having an American flag visible in his funeral home for all to admire. Uncle Mike could be found spending many hours on the funeral home porch reading several newspapers every day, waving and greeting those who walked and drove past. He was a frequent diner in numerous Dunmore restaurants and was quick to generously treat someone to a drink or pay for their dinner.

His family would like to thank the many caregivers in his life over the past several years, including Terry, his devoted friend and neighbor, Joan Deykes, the many nurses and aides at the Jewish Home and those that cared for him at his home.

Surviving are nine nieces and nephews, Thomas Cali and wife, Esther, State College; Maria Cali and Jay Cali, Dunmore; Michael Cali, Olyphant; Mary Lou Carlucci, Ithaca, N.Y.; John Carlucci and wife, Lisa, Vestal, N.Y.; Jack Carlucci, Voorhees, N.J.; Ann Martino and husband, Vincent, Madison Twp.: and Robert Carlucci and wife, Carla, Clarks Summit; two sisters-in-law, Victoria Carlucci, Vestal; and Florence Carlucci, Dunmore; cousins, Phyllis Wilding and husband, Michael; and Michelle Cawley, all of Dunmore; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and colleagues and friends from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Grace Cali; and three brothers, Jack, Vito and Leonard Carlucci.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment with full military honors will follow the Mass in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow on the family lot.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mike's family. I grew up at 401 E Drinker St, just up and across the street from the funeral home. My Dad rented a garage from Mike for years (and Mike's mother before that). Growing up, Mike was always so friendly and would take the time to talk to me on my way to the garage, to DOMA's or to the mailbox (that used to be in front of the house). I moved away from Dunmore 35 years ago, but whenever I returned with my family, I continued to enjoy stopping by and talking to Mike on his porch. He was a very kind and generous man, and will be missed.

Mike was a true gem...a one in a million..”Nothing but the Best!” I consider myself blessed not only to have worked years with him in the business but to have him as a friend. I don't think I will ever meet anyone who could read the New York Times like he did…from front to back including the ads. I will never forget his refrigerator stock of sopressata; numbers don't count (his response to the question of his age); the many lunch times together; the car trips with me being a passenger; sitting on the porch; his belief that "every days a holiday"; the memories are endless! I will continue to share those memories and he will forever remain in my heart! I can only imagine the reunion with his family as he was called “Home”…..you will always be “better than Gibbons” until we meet again my friend Rest in Peace!
