Gregory Salko Obituary
His children include, Rebecca Manarchuck, Fairfax, Va.; Dr. David, Brunswick, Maine; Dr. Ellenita Chavez, Santa Fe, N.M.; Darius, Westport, Mass.; and Dr. Philip, Providence, R.I. He was known as "Papa" to his seven grandchildren, Kayley, JB, Aniella, Julianne, James, Nathan and Amelia. He is also survived by four siblings, Joseph, Whippany, N.J.; Kay DeRichie, Simpson, Pa.; Rose Orehek, Vandling, Pa.; and Dr. Gerald, Newton Lake, Pa.; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dr. Salko was born and raised in Whites Crossing to Mary Rushen and Joseph Salko. He attended the University of Scranton and went to medical school at Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia. At Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., he received the Intern of the Year award. He served in the Army Reserve for four years before establishing his medical practice in Whites Crossing in 1974. For 40 years, Dr. Greg focused on family medicine and geriatrics. His motto as a hometown doctor was "Quality Healthcare for Life." He doctored with compassion for each and every one of his patients, making house calls whenever necessary. He believed in the growth of his small town community and developed healthcare opportunities by establishing Whites Crossing Medical Center, Osprey Ridge Nursing Home and Birch Hills and Mallard Meadows Assisted Living Homes.
Dr. Greg was also an avid farmer who truly listened to the land. He found happiness gardening, tending to farm animals and sharing his bountiful harvest with family and friends. His passion for land conservation inspired the development of many environmental preservation and educational projects. He also enjoyed the outdoors on frequent golf outings. His greatest love of all was his family.
As a dedicated parishioner of St. Michael's Parish in Simpson, Dr. Greg served as a lector, participated in and attended Mass regularly. His faith truly sustained him as he lived by Proverbs 3:5-6.
His parents, Joseph and Mary; and his brothers, James and Leonard, preceded Dr. Greg in death.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, Aug. 19, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 46 Midland St., Simpson. St. Michael's Cemetery will be his final resting place. Those attending the Mass are asked to proceed directly to the church.
Visitation for Dr. Greg Salko will be Sunday, Aug. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home, 621 Main St., Simpson.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to contribute to the International Myeloma Foundation at donate.myeloma.org or donate blood at their local blood bank.

As a child, aftter years of dealing with what was thought to be a food allergy, Doctor Salko diagnosed me with panic attacks. With said diagnosis, treatment was given and my life was able to move forward. He was the only one out of many doctors who made the.correct diagnosis. Rest in peace Doctor. U were the only one who solved the pieces to my puzzle.

One of the kindest and best Doctor there could ever be. He saved my son's life when he was only 23 year old by finding him the best brain surgeon in the country. Also I will never forget how he sat with my mom at her house on a Saturday night for hours when she was dying and also did everything possible to save my dad. I will miss him, he was a GREAT man who I respected and admired.
