Andrew Lengel, 73, of Olyphant, died Wednesday afternoon at his home after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

The son of the late Andrew and Antoinette Lengel, he was born in Olyphant on November 9, 1939. He graduated from Olyphant High School and proudly served in the United States Navy as a fire control, electronic and radar technician. After leaving the Navy, he went on to earn his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering as well as M.S. degree in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State University. In addition, he earned his MBA from Drexel University in Finance and Marketing.

His early career began working as a Project Engineer for the Philco-Ford Corporation, where he obtained secret security clearance and was a project leader working on proprietary micro-processor design, matrix design and configuration and field installation. He worked for the Remington Rand Corporation where he developed concepts around the "office of the future." He directed design of the electronic typewriter, calculator and facsimile products. He produced working prototypes of typewriters and helped coordinate prototype production through outside model shops and software firms. In the latter part of his career, he worked as an associate professor of engineering technology at Luzerne County Community College and taught technical mathematics, electronics and communication courses. Prior to retirement, he was employed at WEA Manufacturing in Olyphant in the research and development area and was responsible for the evaluation of new production equipment in the compact disc industry.

Andy is survived by his sister, Mary Hanley, White Plains, New York; and his best friend and caregiver, Brian Calabro and family, Julie, Bryan and Olivia. He was passionate about his Chow Chow dogs over the years, with his most recent, Niki, surviving him. He was preceded in death by his sister, Vera; and brother, Jack.

Andy's family would like to thank the hospice unit of Regional Hospital of Scranton for their compassionate and caring medical assistance provided in his last few months.
