Anne Dowd Geoffroy of Jermyn passed away Friday afternoon surrounded by her husband, Gerard J. Geoffroy, and daughter, Rebecca Dowd Geoffroy-Schwinden, at Regional Hospital of Scranton.

Anne was born in Carbondale and raised by her parents, Mary Kilker Dowd and John Michael Dowd Sr. in the Bronx, New York. Anne spent summers in the family home in Jermyn that was built by her great-grandfather, John Marsh, in 1896. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marymount Manhattan College, and after working at Minisink Valley School District in New York, she returned to Northeastern Pennsylvania, where she taught fourth and then third grade for 35 years at Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School, Greenfield Elementary School and Mayfield Elementary School at Lakeland School District.

Anne was a catechism teacher, lector and Eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart of Mary in Jermyn.

After her retirement, she served the homebound as a Eucharistic minister. In retirement, she and her husband, Gerard, continued to live in the same family home where she would summer as a child; she was the fifth generation of Marsh women to own the home.

Anne was a passionate teacher, wellspring of trivia knowledge, and gourmet cook. Her love and wit filled every child she taught, every friend she cherished, and every family member for whom she cared.

Every student was her "favorite third-grader," every friend was her "dear friend." She was a model of independence and intelligence for her daughter. But none of these could surpass the love she had for her husband, Gerard.

Surviving are her husband, Gerard J. Geoffroy, Jermyn; a daughter, Rebecca Dowd Geoffroy-Schwinden and son-in-law, Chris Schwinden, Durham, N.C.; a sister, MaryAnn Cappiello and brother-in-law, Robert Cappiello Sr., Pleasantville, N.Y.; a brother, John Michael Dowd Jr., Sykesville, Md.; a brother-in-law, James Feeney, Ft. Myers, Fla.; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Feeney; and sister-in-law, Patricia Dowd.

Anne's family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Linda Thomas-Hemak and the medical team at the Wright Center for Primary Care, and Dr. Samir Pancholy. During the past five years, these professionals have provided care, compassion and hope beyond measure. Our family will be forever grateful for the time with Anne that they extended through exceptional medical care.
