Carmella Gerchman, 77, formerly of Carbondale, died Wednesday at the Forest City Nursing Home. Her husband is Robert Gerchman. The couple had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 3.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Joseph "Bruce" and Antoinette Colandro Cerminaro. She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. Carmella received training as a nurse's aide at St. Joseph's Hospital, Carbondale, and was employed there for 20 years. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Simpson for many years, and then St. Rose Parish, Carbondale.

Some of her hobbies were gardening, crocheting, cooking and baking. Carmella was a very caring woman and the eldest of eight children. Much of her young adult life was spent looking after her younger siblings. Later in life, she cared for her own parents, children and other family members whenever she was needed. A woman of great faith and love, she greeted everyone with a friendly smile and kind word. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Forest City Nursing Home for their outstanding care over the past two years.

She is also survived by four children and their spouses, Mark and Elizabeth Gerchman; and Eric and Cathy Gerchman, all of Dunmore; Maria and Steve Bianco, East Ararat; and Diane and Tom Walsh, Jermyn; 10 grandchildren, Alexa, Griffin, Kayle and Alec Gerchman; Stephanie, Brianne and Angela Bianco; and Kyle, Katie and Colin Walsh; three brothers, Joseph Cerminaro, Boomer, N.C.; Ross Cerminaro, Jessup; and Santo Cerminaro, Carbondale; a sister, Jane Moran, Pequannock, N.J.; nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Anthony and James.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home Inc., 621 Main St., Simpson, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 46 Midland St., Simpson. Interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Simpson.
