Carol K. Gemmell, 75, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Sunday evening at Wesley Village Nursing Home, Pittston, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Thomas and Anna Knoepfel Gemmell, she was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, class of 1955, and was a member of the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the church choir, a board member of the Century Club and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic. Before retirement, she was a legal secretary for attorney Robert Robinson, whose office was in the Penn Security Bank Building, Scranton.
She was a loving sister and aunt; she was a classy and worldly person who liked to travel and traveled to many different places. She enjoyed Tai Chi, dining out, shopping and had a passion for music, including playing the piano and singing.
Surviving are a sister, Judith Ann Mechler and husband, Frank, Duryea; a niece, Melissa Mechler, Dupont; a nephew, Thomas Mechler and wife, Jeanne, Essex Junction, Vt.; great-nephews and great-niece, Anthony, Nicholas, Scott, Jack and Anna; and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by her longtime companion, William Shorten.
The funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, with services by the Rev. Dr. Stuart Thomas Wilson, interim pastor. Interment will be private in Dunmore Cemetery.
