Charles Peterson Obituary

Charles Peterson of Gouldsboro, Pa., and Mount Pleasant, S.C., died in South Carolina on Jan. 14, 2017, as a result of a motorcycle accident on that day.

Born on June 27, 1939, Mr. Peterson graduated from Clemson University, with an advanced degree from New York University. He worked as a professor and ombudsperson at Kean College of New Jersey for many years, retiring in 1999.

Mr. Peterson was a mentor to his students, an adventurer and an artisan. He had a true fondness and appreciation for the outdoors, captained and crewed large sailboats on the Atlantic and Caribbean, pioneered the sport of whitewater kayaking and published articles about his experiences. He was a master craftsman with impeccable taste and skill, and most recently very proud of launching his handcrafted 8-foot wooden boat. His legacy is his commitment to live every day to the fullest, pursuing his passions. "Carpe diem" was the motto that was the basis of his life.

Mr. Peterson is survived by his best friend and beloved, Bonnie Townsend, who was his favorite companion; his loving children, David and Janet; his sister, Harriet Rocklein; many cousins, nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Peterson will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Kean College of New Jersey, College of Education, 1000 Morris Ave., Union, NJ 07083.

Charles Peterson was one of my professors at Kean University back in the 70's and was not only a mentor, but also became a good friend. We sailed the Carribean and Chesapeake Bay and those trips with family and friends are some of my most cherished memories.

Bonnie, Janet,David, and Hariett, My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I am Hilda's oldest daughter. My Mother dearly loved Charlie. She would always save his Christmas news letters for us to read. We always had a crush on Charlie growing up because he was so cute and so much fun! With love, Wanda Musselwhite
