Claire Joyce Giannella, 79, a resident of Harford since 1971, died Tuesday evening at Commonwealth Hospice, Scranton, after a short battle with cancer. Her husband of 31 years, Nick Giannella, died on May 27, 1994.

Born Aug. 23, 1933, in Paterson, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Florence Keller Keyser. Claire and her husband Nick were proprietors of a restaurant and pony-ride business in West Paterson, N.J., before moving to Harford. She ran a family farm and household after moving to Harford.

Her greatest joy in life was working on the family farm. She raised and cared for a variety of animals, including cows, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, horses, etc. She bred and raised registered Arabian horses and German shepherd dogs. Her constant champion up until her death was her German shepherd, Sandy. She also enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, orchard, and just being outdoors. Her hobbies were knitting and woodworking. She always looked forward to attending her granddaughters' school plays and musical presentations.

She is survived by a daughter, Laurie Serfilippi and husband, Steven, Thompson; two granddaughters, Sarah and Rachel; a sister, Lois Marakovitz and husband, Matthew, Wayne, N.J.; and two nieces, Susan and Sharon.

A memorial service will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. from the Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 18 Airport Road, Clifford, with the Rev. Patricia Hanley, pastor of Lake Como United Methodist Church officiating. Private interment will take place at the Gibson Cemetery.
