Earl J. Houston, 63, of Avoca, died Monday at Geisinger South Hospice Community Care, Wilkes-Barre, after a courageous battle with cancer. His wife, Mary Houston, died July 11, 2011.

Born in Avoca on Nov. 12, 1949, son of the late William and Myrtle Griffith Houston, Earl was a member of St. John's Primitive Methodist Church, Avoca and attended Avoca High School. After high school, Earl joined the Navy and served during the Vietnam War. Throughout his life, he worked for the Brooks Co., the Trane Co., Techneglass Corp. and with Simona America Inc. Earl was a member of the VFW Post 396, Wyoming. He was an avid polka dancer, appearing on a regular basis on WVIA Pennsylvania Polka. Earl was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and he will be deeply missed.

Surviving are his son, Brian and wife, Jennifer, and their children, Zachary, Abigail and Benjamin, all of Exeter; a sister, Betty Cimini, Avoca; a cousin, Alice Powell; brother-in-law, Frank and his wife, Donna Wilk; many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mary Wilk, on July 9; and his siblings, Doreen Stassi, Richard Houston and Rose Dockett.

The funeral will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. from Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea, with services at 10 in St. John's Primitive Methodist Church, Main Street, Avoca, with the Rev. Dale Pepper officiating. Interment will be held at the Langcliffe Cemetery, Avoca. Military honors will be provided by the AMVETS Honor Guard of Dupont.
