Elizabeth MacTaggart McFarland of Clarks Summit died Saturday morning in the hospice unit at Regional Hospital of Scranton. She was married to Edward F. McFarland from 1960 until his death on April 29, 2012.

Born Jan. 8, 1935, in Scranton, Beth was the daughter of the late Alex and Mary Carson MacTaggart. She was a member of Clarks Green United Methodist Church and the Lake Waynewood Association, where she served as a board member and the first woman president from 1992-1994. Beth was the first granddaughter to sit with her grandmother, Elizabeth D. Carson, on the YWCA board. She was also the water safety chairwoman for the Scranton Chapter of the American Red Cross. Beth served on the Clarks Summit Shade Tree Commission and was the first woman to serve on Clarks Summit Borough Council. She was very active in the Junior Century Club and the Scranton Pocono Girl Scout Council, where she earned her curved bar and later became a troop leader. She graduated from Scranton Central High School in 1952, where was a member of the Rainbow Girls and TYS Sorority. She attended Syracuse University, where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She also attended Cedar Crest College. After college, Beth worked at the Globe Store as its fashion coordinator.
She was known for her swimming lessons and lifesaving courses from the 1950s through the 1980s at Lake Waynewood.
Surviving are a daughter, Alexis McFarland Kelly and husband, attorney P. Timothy Kelly, with whom she resided; a grandson, Rhys D. Kelly, Clarks Summit; two cousins, Janet Fries, Washington, D.C.; and Albert F. Fries Jr., Great Neck, N.Y..
Beth was also preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Edward Kelly.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from Clarks Green United Methodist Church, 119 Glenburn Road, with services by the Rev. Donald Anderson. Interment will follow at Clarks Green Cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
