Irene Pehanich Granko, 85, of Old Forge and formerly of Taylor, died Sunday at home. She was the widow of Sam J. Granko, who died in 1974.

Born in Taylor, daughter of the late Michael and Anna Pepsin Pehanich, she was educated in Taylor schools and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Taylor. Before retirement, Irene worked for Hillcrest Shades, Old Forge.

A thoughtful, caring person to others, Irene will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her. Her family was everything to her. She was a devoted mother who especially liked spending time with her family, going out to dinner, shopping, frequenting the casino and summer picnics. You could come to her house on any given Sunday morning and find her either sitting on the back porch or inside listening to polkas. She was a former member and devoted fan of the Polka Dot & Polka Dance Cats Club. Irene was an excellent cook, especially of Polish and Slovakian food. Strong in her belief and faith, Irene was truly devoted to St. Ann, attending St. Ann's Novena for 40 years. During her illness, her son, daughter, and daughter-in-law took loving care of her.

Her family would like to thank Dr. Ken Sebastianelli, Dr. Stahl, Dr. Smeraldi and Dr. Stivala for their loving care and compassion during her illness. A special note of gratitude also goes to the Rev. Gary Mensinger for his monthly visits to Irene, during which she adored his sense of humor.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol Granko, Old Forge; a son, Samuel Granko and wife, Lorraine, with whom she resided in Old Forge; two granddaughters, Ami and Erin; five great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins, including nephew Rich, and nieces Pat and Marlene Dowhy, who she was very close to.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Michael Pehanich; and a sister, Mary Dowhy.

The funeral will be Thursday with Panachida at 9 a.m. from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge, followed by Divine Liturgy at 10 in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Oak Street, Taylor, to be celebrated by the Rev. Gary Mensinger, pastor. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Old Forge.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Parastas will be held at 7. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, c/o the Rev. Gary Mensinger, 140 Church St., Old Forge, PA 18518. To leave an online condolence, visit www.ferrifuneralhome.com.
