James M. Gilligan of Scranton died Wednesday evening at Hospice Community Care, Dunmore.

Born in Scranton, son of the late James H. and Anna Foley Gilligan, he was a graduate of Holy Rosary High School. He attended the University of Scranton and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Before retirement, he worked as a brick layer and was a member of its union. He was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church.

He was a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was a devoted member of Holy Rosary Church and attended daily Mass.

Surviving are two brothers, Dr. William Gilligan and wife, Rita, Potomac, Md.; and Dr. Thomas Gilligan and wife, Patricia, New Market, Md.; one sister-in-law, Geraldine Gilligan, Scranton; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Gilligan; and two sisters, Marion Gilligan and Carol Mikan.

The funeral will be Monday from the Edward Knight O'Donnell Funeral Home, 323 William St., with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.

Viewing, Sunday 4 to 8 p.m.
