Joan Hoban Byrne, 86, of Scranton, died Tuesday at the Green Ridge Health Care Center, Scranton. She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Byrne, who died on Sept. 13, 1989.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late John and Mary McPeek Hoban, she was a graduate of St. Paul High School and the Scranton State Hospital School of X-ray Technology. Joan worked as an X-ray technician and for many years assisted her husband in the management of the Byrne Funeral Home in Olyphant. She was a member of the St. Patrick's School PTA and the Altar and Rosary Society. Joan was a member of St. Clare Church, Scranton.

She was devoted to her family and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be dearly and forever missed. She passed away surrounded by her family.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Green Ridge Health Care Center, especially Melissa Whyte, Ann Stone, Ann Astolfi, Michelle Estes, Janelle Wise and the hospice staff at Celtic Health Care, especially Lori O'Boyle, for the compassionate care shown to Joan during her illness. She was treated with the upmost dignity and respect.

She is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Riley and husband, Robert, Dalton; Joan Cowley and husband, John, Scranton; and Maureen Reid and husband, J. Spence, Hershey; two sons, James, Clarks Summit; and Patrick and wife, Ellene, East Northport, N.Y.; a sister, Karen Healy and her husband, Tom, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 12 beloved grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a grandson, James Joseph; two sisters, Nan Giroux, Dania, Fla.; Marilyn McElroy, Woodbridge, N.J.; and a brother, John Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sons-in-law; Harold J. Valkenburg and Richard T. Kelley.

Everyone attending the funeral is asked to proceed directly to the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Clare's Church, 2301 N. Washington Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Brian J.T. Clarke. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Eugene A. Cusick Funeral Home, 217 Jefferson Ave., Scranton. Memorial contributions may be made in Joan's name to the ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260 Ambler, PA 19002.
