John Gerega, 89, formerly of Old Forge, and Bloomingdale, N.J., died Wednesday at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Scranton. His beloved wife, the former Margaret Oustrich, died March 20, 2006.

Born in Old Forge, son of the late Kondrat and Stefania Dovhaluk Gerega, he was a 1941 graduate of Old Forge High School. John faithfully served our country with the Army during World War II and was the recipient of numerous citations. For many years, he worked for Ford Motor Co. He was a faithful and devoted parishioner of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, Little Falls, NJ.
He is survived by a sister, Betty Gondella, Taylor; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Giaramita, Mary Michko, Stella Gordon and two brothers, Paul and Harry.
A blessing service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, by the Very Rev. Protopresbyter Mark Leasure. Interment, St. Michael's Orthodox Cemetery, Old Forge.
