John "Jackie" Kozel, Dickson City, died Wednesday morning at home. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Rita Zavistoski, on Nov. 20, 1995.

Born Nov. 7, 1929, in Hazleton, he was the son of the late Joseph J. and Mary Hettman Kozel. He attended Throop schools, was a self-employed heavy machine operator and a former member of Holy Ghost Church, Olyphant. Jack served in the Army during World War II. He was a life member of VFW Post 7257, Throop, and also belonged to the Over 55 Club.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Salvatore Lawrence and his staff for their kindness and patience given to Jack during his illness; and also the Celtic Hospice Group. A special thank you to his caregivers who diligently took care of him.
He is survived by a daughter, Cindy and husband, James Boccardo, Scranton; a son, John Jr. and wife, Christine Kozel, Moscow; companion, Archy Poplawski, Throop; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Oleniak; and a grandson, John Oleniak.
The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the John F. Glinsky Funeral Home, 445 Sanderson St., Throop, with Mass at 9:30 in Blessed Sacrament Parish at St. Anthony's Church, Rebecca Street, Throop. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
There are no calling hours.
