Joseph A. Kneller of Honesdale, formerly of Scranton, died early Monday in the VNA Inpatient Hospice Unit in the Geisinger Community Medical Center after a brief illness. His wife, the former Carol Mecca, died Oct. 25, 2009.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Joseph F. and Julia Weber Kneller, he graduated from Scranton Technical High School and the University of Wisconsin School of Banking, Madison, Wis. During his service with the Army, he was stationed in the Korean Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Honesdale, and a former member of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, Scranton. He was a Boy Scout, earning the rank of Eagle, a member of the Honesdale Lions Club, the Free and Accepted Masons, Scranton, and the Wildwood Fishing Club. He was a banker for 48 years and retired from the Wayne Bank.

He loved his grandchildren, enjoyed spending time at the Wildwood Fishing Club and was an avid outdoorsman.

Surviving are a son, Matthew J. Kneller and wife, Lori, Temecula, Calif.; a daughter, Amy C. Austin and husband, Eric, Palmyra, N.J.; three grandchildren, Rian Austin, Meghan Austin and Caley Kneller; a brother, Edward C. Kneller and wife, Joyce, Moscow; in-laws, Joseph and Mary Mecca, Old Forge; JoAnne Mecca, Old Forge; Richard James, Old Forge; and Robert and Deborah Mecca, Scranton; and four nieces, Vanessa Mecca, Elkins Park; Kerie Mecca, Old Forge; Laurie Walter, Danville; and Linda Medaska, Bethlehem.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, 437 Hickory St., Scranton, by the Rev. Michael Lyle, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Honesdale.

The family will greet friends in the church parlor after the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Honesdale, 201 10th St., Honesdale, PA 18431-1917; or the Honesdale Lions Club, 170 Ridge Lake Drive, Honesdale, PA 18431-2360.
