Joseph Gilbert of West Scranton died Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Commonwealth Hospice of Northeast Pennsylvania and Dr. Anthony Perry, who through his illness became like family. His wife is the former Mae Esposito and they had just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on October 6.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Frank and Myrtle Holden Gilbert Ciliberti. Educated in Scranton schools, he received his GED while proudly serving in the United States Army during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for over 35 years by the Tobyhanna Army Depot.
Joseph enjoyed sports, especially golfing and bowling. He was previously active in the West Scranton Teener League as a coach.
Also surviving are a son, James Gilbert and wife, Susan; daughter, Elaine Davitt and husband, Martin, all of Scranton; sister, Gertrude Zackowski, Liverpool, N.Y.; two brothers, David Gilbert, Schuylerville, N.J.; and Robert Gilbert, Scranton; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Joseph T. Gilbert; and a sister, Mary Krushan.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Patrick F. Guido Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, 949 Scranton St., Scranton. All attending are asked to proceed directly to church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, 4 to 7 p.m.
