Lawrence A. Gabriel, 82, of Carbondale, died Friday at Geisinger Community Medical Center following a car accident. His wife is Lonnie Brango Gabriel.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Frank and Fanny Perri Gabriel, he was a funeral director in the Carbondale area for more than 45 years as owner and operator of the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Homes, 2 Hospital Street and 74 N. Main Street. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Carbondale.

Surviving are two sons, funeral director, Lawrence A. Gabriel Jr. and wife, Linda, Carbondale; and Gary Gabriel and wife, Colette, Reading; two daughters, Ramona Gabriel-Cohn and companion, Ray Oller, California; and Francine Gabriel and life partner, Dr. Theresa Baseski, Forty Fort.; 13 grandchildren, Lawrence A. Gabriel III, Landon Gabriel, Logan Gabriel and Lance Gabriel; Lincoln Gabriel and companion, Mary Newak, Carbondale; Alexandra, JP and Jonathan Cohn, California; Hannah, Emily and Julia Gabriel, Forty Fort; Gaige and Jackson Gabriel, Reading; one great-grandson, Levi Gabriel, Carbondale; and one great-granddaughter, Arianna Diaz, California; two brothers, Alfred (Gabriel) Cleary, Peckville; and Thomas Bonacci, Carbondale; five sisters, Margaret Guzzi, Dalton; Barbara Dougherty, Waymart; Ann Marie Maddage and Mary Ann Bonacci, Carbondale; and Ronnie Stewart, Florida; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Gabriel and Marion Gillott; and five brothers, Samuel, Anthony, George, Frank and Tony Gabriel.

Throughout his 59 years in the funeral service, his profession was his life. Never taking a vacation or time away from his business, he strived to provide each family he served with "the ultimate in professional service" by handling every detail, striving for absolute perfection. His caring, kindness and compassion to the families he served was second to none.

His son, Lawrence A. Gabriel Jr., will continue that "ultimate in professional service" as a tribute to his father's legacy.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home, 2 Hospital Street, Carbondale, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Carbondale. Interment, Our Lady of Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
