Lindsay Doherty Obituary

Lindsay O'Rourke Doherty died Sunday at Geisinger Community Medical Center. She is survived by her husband of 10 years, James A. Doherty III, and their three children, James IV, Kathryn and Paige.

Born in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 21, 1980, daughter of Vincent and Bonny O'Rourke of Holden, Mass., she graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1998 and the College of the Holy Cross in 2002, where she was the recipient of the Presidential Service Award. She was employed by the Diocese of Scranton, raising money for Catholic education. Previously, she held sales and marketing positions at the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Bloomingdale's and Pearson Education.

She was an active community volunteer, contributing her time and talent to St. Clare/St. Paul School, the Sant' Andrea Society and St. Joseph's Center. She was fiercely devoted to her family, particularly her husband and three children, who were the light of her life. Unfailingly kind, generous and committed to her faith, she brought out the best in the wide circle of family and friends who adored her. Those who loved her will remember her radiant smile and enthusiasm, her abiding care and compassion, her sense of humor and the deep joy she brought to all the lives she touched.

Also surviving are a brother, Robert O'Rourke of Groton, Mass.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mimi Doherty of Scranton; Judy Riff and her husband, James, of Clarks Summit; Grace Hillebrand and her husband, Thomas, of Clarks Summit; Patrick Doherty of Scranton; and Jack Doherty of New York City; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton.

The family invites all attending the Mass to go directly to the church.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

Dear Doherty and O'Rourke families,

I knew Lindsay through her cousins Tara and Shannon. We always had so much fun together when we all still lived in NYC, and I remember us going out and celebrating her engagement to Jim all those years ago. This tragedy has been weighing so heavily on mind these last few days, and I just wanted to share my condolences with your families. Wishing you strength and comfort during this incredibly sad time.

To the Doherty and O'Rourke families,
I only knew Lindsay through my brother, who is a good friend of both her and Jimmy. I did not see her much but when I did, she always had the most beautiful smile on her face. She left an impression of being just a genuine and sincere person in the few times I was in her presence. I am beyond heartbroken for your family, especially her husband and three beautiful babies. I will keep you in my prayers always , and ask that God comforts you everyday, until you see her again. Rest in Peace Lindsay ~ you were a beautiful person here on earth, and no doubt you are now an angel in heaven.

I know the sadness you must be going through right now. Nothing can be said that can ease the pain you are feeling. But, please take comfort in knowing that she will always be there with you and God can comfort you and your family as you travel through this next phase of your life.

I grew up with Lindsay and shared many wonderful soccer memories with her. We played in so many games and tournaments together. One of my favorite memories is when my mom took Lindsay, Katie, Renee (two of our other teammates) and I to Nashua NH for a soccer tournament. We spent the night in the hotel and my mom took us shopping. It was something so simple but I remember all of having such a fun time.

Lindsay's smile could light up a room. Although I haven't seen her since high school, I will always remember her for her kind heart. My deepest condolences to her mom, dad, and brother Robbie, as well as to her husband, children, and extended family.

Dear Doherty and O'Rourke families: I am very sorry for your loss of this amazing-sounding woman. Our paths crossed, albeit very briefly, in the late 1990s or early 2000s; we worked in the same building at One Dupont in DC; I was friends with a woman who i think may have been her boss (Melissa Di Leonardo). I remember Lindsay talking with fondness about Scranton when she found out that's where I was born and raised. She was dating her now husband and talked about how they frequently drove to Scranton for weekend visits and although she wasn't a native of the area, she mentioned to me that she really liked it. What a small world. Although she and I barely got to know one another, I sensed the good, heart-filled person she obviously was. What a beautiful person, inside and out. Her obituary and the piece in the Times clearly showed just how very much Lindsay was loved and adored by you all. I wanted to let you know that even those of us who barely (if at all) knew her, thought fondly of her. From here in MD to you in PA, I am sending you fervent wishes of peace, prayers, and strength during these difficult times, and may you lean on the lifeline of good memories spent with Lindsay, to carry you forward. May she rest in peace, and may God bless her husband and those beautiful children of hers.

I have never met Lindsay but have seen her face around many places in the Greenridge neighborhood over the years. From being a father of young children myself, I can't stop thinking about the loss & unfairness of this tragedy & how all of my heart goes out to her husband & 3 young children. I learned of Lindsay being this amazingly great & kind person to her family, friends & community which made me realize that there are/is still good people out there doing great things everyday. I believe Lindsay's legacy will forever be remembered & it is so rightfully deserving that it forever does. Sorry for this tragic loss.

I am so very sorry to hear of Lindsay's passing and I wish to send my deepest condolences to her husband, children, the O'Rourke and Doherty families and all who knew and loved her. She was such a kind and special person and I so appreciate the brief friendship we shared when I lived in Scranton. We connected after a Holy Cross Alumni event, she welcomed me to the community and my time there was made so much better because of her. Though we haven't been in touch recently, I will always remember the kindness she showed me and the selfless way she lived every aspect of her life. She will be dearly missed by everyone whose life she touched!

Dear Bonny, Vin and Rob,

I remember Lindsay as a bright and thoughtful girl full of energy and light. It was always a treat to see her bright, wide smile when she came to our house in Holden to pick up Rob or when she dropped Bill off after driving the two of them around. She took Molly and Cal under her wing at that fashion show so many years ago and always spread joy wherever she went.
