Marita Madeleine Bour Ritter, 92, a South Scranton resident, died December 20, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by Joseph, her beloved husband of 65 years.
The Guest Book is expired.
Marita was born in Scranton, and was the daughter of the late John L. and Evelyn Scholl Bour. She was a lifelong resident of South Side. She was a member of the former St. Mary of the Assumption Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society. Upon the closing of St. Mary's, she and Joe joined St. Paul of the Cross Parish. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School. She was active in Girl Scouts for over 20 years, serving as a troop leader and a member of the Board of the Greater Scranton Council, and was also a dedicated member of the American Legion Auxiliary, holding many offices.
An accomplished pinochle player, she loved to teach the game to family and friends. She spent countless hours playing board games with her grandchildren, and will always be remembered for her homemade apple pies made from her own apple tree. Her love of trees was known throughout the neighborhood, inspiring many of her neighbors to plant their own. A woman of strong conviction and unshakable faith, she left a lasting impression on everyone she knew and her family will miss her for the rest of their lives. One of her proudest accomplishments was sending her six children, a niece and nephew to college. A passionate animal lover, numerous cats and dogs found a better life in her home over the years. She had a quick and agile mind, a generous nature and a loving heart. Her family was her lifesblood as she was theirs. Her heart and her home were their hub and Sunday nights will never be the same.
Also surviving are her daughters, Marita (Ivan) Howell; Evelyn (William) Fontanella; Anne (Joseph) Kayes; and Marlene (Joseph) Maldonato; niece, Bernadette (Gabriele) Gnudi; and nephew, Bernard Kiesnowski; 16 beloved grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph; a daughter, Roberta Ritter; sisters, Evelyn McAloon, Agatha Neville, Loretta Dwyer and Bernadette Kiesnowski; and a brother, Joseph Bour.
The funeral will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the August J. Haas Funeral Home Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., Scranton, with Mass at 10 in Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Scott Sterowski, pastor.
