Mary Louise Mayer, 79, of North Scranton, passed away early Friday at Regional Hospital of Scranton after an illness. She was the wife of Donald G. Mayer Sr., to whom she was married for more than 56 years.

Born and raised in North Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Daniel P. and Sadie Loftus O'Neill. She was a graduate of Holy Rosary High School, class of 1951, and was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Church at Mary Mother of God Parish.

Mary Louise was a kind and gentle soul. She had a strong will and always put others above herself. She was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved playing games, making breakfast, and spending time with them on the front porch in the summer. She enjoyed a good crossword puzzle, canning, baking and conversation. Along with her husband, she owned and operated the Mayer's Place in North Scranton, and her pizza recipe was revered by all. She also worked for a time at Pioneer American Bank, North Scranton.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her children, Jack, Scranton; Thomas, Newport Beach, Calif.; Kathleen McGuigan and husband, John, Scranton; Don Jr., Scranton; James and wife, Carrie, Virginia Beach, Va.; and Michael, Scranton; 15 grandchildren, Erika and Brooke Mayer; Michael, John Jr., Daniel, Kevin, Matthew and Brian McGuigan; Sadie Flynn, Warren and James Mayer Jr.; and Michael Jr., Emily, Allison and Madison Mayer; and a great-grandchild, Natalie McGuire; a brother, William O'Neill and wife, Sue, Scranton; sisters-in-law, Romayne O'Neill, Scranton; Alice Gorman, Binghamton, N.Y.; and Pat O'Neill, Dickson City; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Daniel and Thomas O'Neill.

The funeral will be Monday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. All those wishing to attend the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

Friends may call today, 3 to 7 p.m., at the Edward Knight O'Donnell Funeral Home, 323 William St., Scranton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Rosary Church at Mary Mother of God Parish.
