Paul J. Mackin, 55, Scranton, died unexpectedly Friday. His wife and high school sweetheart is the former Deborah Miluski Mackin. The couple would have celebrated 29 years of marriage on Oct. 26, 2014.

Born in Scranton, son of Lillian Montcalm Mackin and the late Cletus Mackin, he was a graduate of West Scranton High School and a member of St. Ann's Basilica. Before his retirement, Paul was employed at a job he loved. For 22 years, he was a member of the Scranton Fire Department, and served as a captain from 1993 until his retirement in 2002.
He was a dedicated husband, father, son, brother and uncle. Paul would lend a helping hand to family, friends and anyone in need. Paul was the eternal jokester, who brought a smile to everyone's face. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and being in the yard with his dog, Zoey.
Also surviving are a son, P.J. Mackin, at home; a daughter, Kelsey Mackin, Maryland; two brothers, Michael Mackin, Massachusetts; and James Mackin and wife Sandy, Taylor; a sister, Mary Kim Courtright and husband, Mayor William Courtright, Scranton; mother-in-law, Eleanor Miluski; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Mackin; and his father-in-law, Henry Miluski.
The funeral will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's St., Scranton, PA 18504, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Basilica. Interment, SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Taylor. Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Paul Mackin's name to the Clearbrook Foundation, 37 N. River St., Suite 101, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
