Paul Jerome "P.J." Carey Jr. of San Diego died peacefully at home on Dec. 7. His wife is Katherine Carey. The couple had been married for 20 years.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Paul Jerome Carey Sr. and Margaret O'Brien Carey, he was a member of St. Ann's Basilica, and a graduate of St. Ann's Elementary School, Scranton Preparatory School and the University of Scranton. P.J. played baseball for several different local leagues — Post 207, Hyde Park Association and Scranton Prep — then signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as a player and then as a coach. He also coached for the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers. P.J.'s whole life was being involved with baseball.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed.

Also surviving are a daughter, Lindsey, Seattle, Wash.; a son, Eric, San Diego; two brothers, Patrick Carey, Scranton; and Robert Carey, Peckville; an aunt, Ann Quatra, Scranton; nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Sunday at 3 p.m. in St. Ann's Basilica, to be celebrated by the Rev. Jack Connor, C.P.
