Robert E. Markarian

Robert E. Markarian, Ph.D., 97, died Wednesday at Reeds Landing in Springfield, Mass. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Dorothy Outen, in 1997.

Born in Windham, N.Y., son of the late Jacob and Dora Euth Markarian, he later lived in West Pittston and Scranton, where he graduated from Central High School in 1931. Dr. Markarian received his AB degree from Lafayette College, a master of education from Harvard University and a doctorate from the University of Connecticut. He was employed as professor of education at Springfield College, where he served as director of the division of community education, the summer school and the division of continuing education from 1948 until his retirement in 1977. As a team member of U.S. educators, he traveled to Egypt under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State. He was a retired lieutenant, 2nd grade, for the Naval Reserve during World War II. He was the author of many articles in professional journals and belonged to several professional organizations, including the New England School Development Council and the New England College Teachers of Education.

He was an avid woodworker and woodcarver. He served as an officer and charter member of the Pioneer Valley Woodcarvers and wrote articles in woodworking magazines. He was the former president of Reeds Landing Independent Residents Association.

Surviving are a daughter, Lettie M. Harrald and husband, David, Visalia, Calif.; a son, Peter V. Markarian and wife, Valorie T., Ipswich, Mass.; six grandchildren, Steven Harrald; James Harrald and wife, Laura; Jeffery Markarian and wife, Joanne; and Andrew, Alex and Amy Markarian; two great grandchildren, Gabriella and Olivia Markarian; and a brother, the Rev. Dr. John J. Markarian and wife, Inge, West Pittston.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. in Christ Church Cathedral, Springfield. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Agawam.
