Robert T. Griffin Sr., 69, of Scranton passed away on Friday after a courageous battle with cancer. His wife of 48 years is the former Saundra Sterling.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late George A. and Marcella Griffin. A graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of 1961, he enlisted in the Navy in 1962 and received a medical discharge that same year. He was a member of First Christian Church, North Main Avenue, Scranton.

Bob always had a smile; even during his battle with cancer, his demeanor and good nature never changed. Always willing to help anyone who asked.

He was currently employed part-time for Dunbar Armored Car as a driver guard.

Owner and operator of Griffins Service on Providence Road, Scranton, for many years, he worked for many of the major car dealers in Scranton. He was a certified auto mechanic and retired from Burne Cadillac.

He was a private pilot who enjoyed flying with his children and showing them the many beautiful places in our area from the air.

Bob was an avid Central City Little League and Farm League supporter. He coached a Champion Farm League team, and as a Little League coach. He also served as the league's treasurer before becoming its president, and served in that position for 10 years. During his years as president, he was instrumental in acquiring the current League Field on Wood Street and started its first T-ball games, and saw Central City win a City/County championship.

Bob is survived by his sons, Lt. Cmdr. Robert T. Griffin Jr., U.S.C.G., and his wife, Lt. Tobijah Griffin, U.S.N., Portsmouth, Va.; Christopher Griffin and his wife, Aimee, also of Portsmouth; and daughter, Shannon Sacchetti and her husband, John, Scranton. He is also survived by the joys of his life, his two granddaughters, Kathryn and Kimberly Zurinski, Scranton, and a stepgrandson, Vincent Sacchetti, Old Forge; sisters, Jane Widenor and husband, James, Clarks Summit; Barbara Shelp and husband, Richard, Scranton; Pamela Morris and husband, Fred, Green Lane, Pa.; and Susan Salmons and companion, David Ross, Scranton; and a brother-in-law, Charles Shenko Jr. and wife, Elizabeth, Madisonville. And many, many wonderful nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Griffin.

Bob's love for dogs was shared by his children, and he had adopted many dogs over the years that no one else wanted. So memorial donations can be made to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, Clarks Summit.

The family would also thank Dr. Lisa Thomas and her staff and Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice for their kindness and loving care that was given to Bob during his illness, especially Ann Marie and Donna.

The funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church, 2043 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with Pastor Charles Consagra officiating. Everyone attending the funeral is asked to go directly to church.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Friends may call today in the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave., Scranton, from 4 to 8 p.m.
